Severe weather conditions cause old abandoned dock to lose balance - Kiel-Friedrichsort Firefighters operate with bilge pumps

(Kiel, August 10th, 2018, 15.30 p.m.) Assumingly due to heavy rain and stormy weather during the past night, a serious incident occurred in a floating dock in Kiel Friedrichsort: the historical Dock 1 was about to sink, staff members of the neighboring LINDENAU shipyard noticed the critical situation and alarmed the authorities.

Presently the Fire Brigade is operating with bilge pumps, also being assisted by the employees from LINDENAU shipyard.

“The historical Dock 1, which was shifted from Memel to Kiel during World War II, might be in direct neighborhood of the LINDENAU shipyard, but it is not property of our shipyard group GERMAN NAVAL YARDS”, a shipyard’s spokesman tells the moving history of the dock and explains the ownership situation: “After LINDENAU shipyard declared insolvency in 2013 the Dock 1 passed into insolvency assets and was abandoned by the liquidator after not having found a purchaser. The Dock has been abandoned since then.“

The direct location of the damaged floating Dock 1 to Lindenau’s Dock 2 made urgent action necessary.

Presently the authorities are discussing the further procedure and handling of the abandoned Dock 1.
